Two years later came Because the Internet, out December 10, 2013. Gambino paired the record with a 72-page screenplay following a character called The Boy, with each track mapped to a scene. The funk turn (2016)
Awaken, My Love! landed on December 2, 2016 and rewrote the rules. Gambino set rap aside almost entirely for psychedelic soul, funk and R and B, leaning on falsetto and live instrumentation in a bold departure from everything before it. The gamble paid off. The album debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200, and its single Redbone won the Grammy for Best Traditional R and B Performance while earning a Record of the Year nomination. Redbone gained a second life scoring the opening of Jordan Peele's Get Out, its stay woke refrain reframed as a warning. The album itself picked up an Album of the Year nomination.
The farewell (2024)
The collection closes with Bando Stone and The New World, released July 19, 2024 on RCA Records. Built as the soundtrack to a film of the same name, the 17-track record was billed as the fifth and final Childish Gambino album. Glover explained that he always saw Gambino as a character, and on some level wanted it to end. Guests include Jorja Smith, Yeat, Flo Milli, Steve Lacy, Foushee and Amaarae, closing the project with a wide, genre-hopping sound that toured the world as The New World Tour.
