The breakthrough (1989 to 1991)

The band we know today really starts with Mother's Milk, released on August 16, 1989. After the death of founding guitarist Hillel Slovak, singer Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea regrouped with a teenage John Frusciante on guitar and Chad Smith on drums. Frusciante pushed the band toward melody, and their cover of Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground became their first real hit. Two years later they made the record that changed everything. Blood Sugar Sex Magik arrived on September 24, 1991, produced by Rick Rubin in a haunted 1917 mansion on Laurel Canyon Boulevard where the band lived while recording. It gave the world Give It Away and Under the Bridge, and its striking cover art is one of the most requested posters we print.

The comeback (1999 to 2002)

Frusciante left after Blood Sugar, overwhelmed by fame, and years of struggle followed. His return set up the second great chapter. Californication, released June 8, 1999, became the band's best-selling album, moving more than 15 million copies worldwide and peaking at number three on the Billboard 200. Its cover, a stylized pool viewed from above, is pure late-nineties iconography. Three years on, By the Way landed on July 9, 2002, with Frusciante writing most of the melodies and leaning into Beatles and doo-wop harmony. Softer, warmer and hugely successful, it sold more than eight million copies and gave the collection one of its most colorful covers.

The peak and the reunion (2006 to 2022)

Then came the big swing. Stadium Arcadium, released in May 2006, was a 28-song double album that debuted at number one, the band's first chart-topper in the United States, and won four Grammy Awards including Best Rock Album. Frusciante left again afterward, and it took until 2019 for him to come home. The result, Unlimited Love, arrived April 1, 2022. It reunited the classic lineup with Rick Rubin, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and led with Black Summer, their first song with Frusciante in 16 years.
