Good to know about Scarface
- Oliver Stone wrote the screenplay while battling his own cocaine addiction, and he moved to Paris to get clean while writing so he could turn the drug into the story's real villain rather than glamorise it.
- Sidney Lumet was originally attached to direct and wanted a more political film about United States drug policy, but he left over creative differences and Brian De Palma took over.
- The production planned to shoot entirely in Miami, but the local Cuban American community objected to the portrayal of Cuban immigrants, so most of the film was shot in Los Angeles with only about two weeks in Miami.
- The MPAA handed the film an X rating three separate times for its violence and profanity. De Palma and the producers appealed, and the board relented and granted an R rating in November 1983, releasing essentially his original cut.
- The infamous chainsaw torture scene was trimmed to escape the X rating, with some of the most graphic shots cut so the film could reach an R.
- The screenplay is packed with profanity, and the word is used somewhere around 200 to 226 times across the film depending on the count, most of it from Tony Montana himself.
- The budget ballooned from an early estimate near 13 to 14 million dollars to roughly 37 million by the time production wrapped, and the film earned about 66 million dollars worldwide, seen as a disappointment in 1983.
- Giorgio Moroder composed the pulsing synth score, including Push It to the Limit performed by Paul Engemann and Rush Rush by Debbie Harry, and the soundtrack earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Score.
- Tony Montana's little friend in the finale is an M16 rifle fitted with an M203 grenade launcher, and Al Pacino burned his hand on the hot barrel during filming, which halted production while he recovered.
- The phrase The World Is Yours appears twice as a visual motif, first on a Goodyear blimp drifting over Miami and later on a globe statue in the fountain of Tony's mansion, marking his rise and his fall.
