The Toronto rise (2013 to 2015)

Abel Tesfaye built his myth on 2011 mixtapes, then made it official with Kiss Land in 2013, his debut studio album for XO and Republic. He called it a world he invented in his head, the paranoia of tour life turned into sound, shaped by a love of horror directors like John Carpenter and David Cronenberg. Two years later everything changed. Beauty Behind the Madness arrived in 2015 with "Can't Feel My Face" and "The Hills," pushed him to the top of the Billboard 200, and won Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2016 Grammy Awards while earning an Album of the Year nomination. On a wall the two covers read as a before and after: the cold blue solitude of the debut against the scarred, defiant portrait of the breakthrough.

Pop stardom and heartbreak (2016 to 2018)

Starboy turned momentum into full pop dominance in 2016. The album was bookended by two Daft Punk collaborations, the title track and "I Feel It Coming," and the trio reunited for a 2017 Grammys performance that turned out to be the last time Daft Punk ever played on a stage. The single went platinum many times over and the red cross motif became instantly recognizable. Then came the comedown. My Dear Melancholy, a short and bruised EP from 2018, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and sent "Call Out My Name" to number four. Its stark portrait is one of the most requested pieces in this collection for a reason: it says everything with almost nothing, and it marks the exact moment the music turned inward before the biggest reinvention of his career.

The After Hours trilogy (2020 to 2025)

This is the era that defined a decade. After Hours landed in March 2020 with the biggest first week of any artist that year, and its single "Blinding Lights" went on to spend a record 88 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, the longest run in the chart's history. The red suit, the bandaged face, the neon Vegas dread: this was Abel building a character and letting him fall apart. Dawn FM followed in 2022, a synth soaked concept album narrated by Jim Carrey that framed life as a radio station guiding listeners through purgatory, crowned by the shocking image of a prematurely aged Abel on the cover. The story closed in 2025 with Hurry Up Tomorrow, the final chapter of the trilogy and the last album released under the Weeknd name, a meditation on the afterlife and rebirth. Together these three covers form one of the strongest continuous runs in modern music, a single story told across three sleeves, and they hang as a set beautifully. Framed side by side, they trace an entire arc from chaos to reflection to release.
