From a Poway garage to Cheshire Cat

blink-182 started with Tom DeLonge on guitar and vocals, Mark Hoppus on bass and vocals, and Scott Raynor behind the drums. Hoppus and DeLonge were introduced by Hoppus's sister Anne and bonded over punk rock, citing the Descendents and Screeching Weasel as early influences. Their first release, the 1994 demo Buddha, was recorded under the name "Blink" and became the band's first recording sold and distributed. An Irish act with the same name objected, so a numerical suffix was tacked on, and "blink-182" stuck. The debut studio album Cheshire Cat followed in February 1995 on the San Diego label Cargo Music, capturing the band at its rawest: power-chord riffs, brisk tempos, melodic hooks, and irreverent humor. Two years later Dude Ranch arrived in June 1997 with the breakout single "Dammit," the song that carried the band out of local clubs and onto national radio for the very first time.

The nurse, the streak & the mainstream

Everything changed in 1998. Travis Barker replaced Raynor on drums midway through a U.S. tour, and his precision and power reshaped the band's sound overnight. The result was 1999's Enema of the State, the album that broke pop-punk into the mainstream. Its cover, shot with adult performer Janine Lindemulder in a nurse's outfit, became instantly iconic; the American Red Cross forced the band to strip the red cross from the hat to avoid a Geneva Convention violation. Powered by "What's My Age Again?", "All the Small Things," and "Adam's Song," the record made blink-182 a household name. The "What's My Age Again?" video, in which the three members sprinted naked through Los Angeles, cemented a public image built on the naked run and cheerful streaking humor. Behind the jokes sat real craft, and the records that came next would prove it.

Experiments, breakups & survival

By 2003 blink-182 wanted to grow up in public. Their fifth studio album, blink-182, often called the untitled or self-titled record, traded some of the speed for atmosphere, recorded in a rented San Diego mansion the band turned into a "musical laboratory." It featured "I Miss You" and "All of This," a gothic collaboration co-written and sung by Robert Smith of The Cure. Then came the hard years. In February 2005 the band announced an indefinite hiatus after disagreements over touring; Hoppus and Barker formed +44 while DeLonge launched Angels & Airwaves. On September 19, 2008, Barker survived a plane crash that killed four of the six people aboard, suffering burns over more than 65 percent of his body and enduring more than 25 surgeries. At the 2009 Grammy Awards, with Barker still recovering, blink-182 announced they were back together.

California, Nine & One More Time

DeLonge departed again in 2015, and the band recruited Alkaline Trio's Matt Skiba. The 2016 album California rewarded the gamble, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200, the band's first U.S. chart-topper in 15 years and their first ever number one in the UK, led by the single "Bored to Death." Skiba stayed for 2019's Nine, a darker, moodier set released through Columbia Records. The most moving turn came off stage. In 2021 Hoppus revealed a diagnosis of stage IV diffuse large B-cell lymphoma; he completed chemotherapy and shared his "all clear" in September 2022, an ordeal that helped mend his friendship with DeLonge, who rejoined that same year. The reunited original trio delivered One More Time... in 2023, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, their third chart-topping album, while the title track ruled Alternative Airplay for a record-tying 20 weeks.
