The Rumours peak (1977 to 1982)

Start where most listeners do. Rumours arrived on 4 February 1977 while the McVies were divorcing and Buckingham and Nicks were coming apart, and the band poured every bit of that tension into the songs. It won the Grammy for Album of the Year and has sold well past 40 million copies worldwide. As a poster, the Herbert Worthington cover photograph of Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood reads clearly from across a room. Then came the swerve. Tusk, released as a sprawling double album on 12 October 1979, was Lindsey Buckingham's flat refusal to make Rumours a second time. It cost a reported 1.4 million dollars, was called the most expensive rock record made up to that point, and famously drafted the USC marching band for its title track. Three years later Mirage pulled back toward warm radio pop, recorded partly at the Château d'Hérouville in France, and sent the band back to number one in the United States for the first time since Rumours on the strength of Hold Me and Gypsy.

The transition years (1990 to 1995)

The line ups shifted and the sleeves got quietly fascinating. Behind the Mask, from 9 April 1990, was the first Fleetwood Mac album after Buckingham left, with Billy Burnette and Rick Vito stepping in, though Buckingham still played acoustic guitar on the title track. It entered the UK chart at number one. Time followed on 10 October 1995 with Bekka Bramlett and Dave Mason aboard. It was the last studio album to feature Christine McVie before her later return, and its commercial struggle makes it the rarest, most collectable sleeve in this set.

The reunion (2003)

Say You Will, released 15 April 2003, brought Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Buckingham and Nicks back together for their first studio album in sixteen years. Christine McVie stepped away as a full member for this one, so the record often plays like a long conversation between Buckingham and Nicks, which is exactly why its poster resonates with fans who love that creative push and pull.
