Where it all began

The legend started with Dr. No in 1962, directed by Terence Young and starring Sean Connery. Made on a modest budget of around 1.1 million dollars, it earned roughly 59.5 million at the box office and set the template for everything that followed: the gun barrel opening, the exotic locations, the impossibly composed hero. A year later From Russia with Love doubled down on Cold War tension and was reportedly a favourite of President John F. Kennedy. Then came Goldfinger in 1964, the film that introduced the gadget laden Aston Martin DB5, complete with ejector seat, revolving number plates and tyre slashers, and turned Bond into a worldwide phenomenon.

The many faces of 007

Half the fun of a Bond poster wall is the parade of leading men. In the official Eon Productions series the role has been played by six actors: Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. Connery bowed out of the Eon films with Diamonds Are Forever in 1971, then returned one last time in the independent Never Say Never Again in 1983, a remake of Thunderball produced outside the main series after a long legal battle over the rights. Decades on, Pierce Brosnan closed his run with Die Another Day in 2002, the twentieth Eon film, released for the franchise's fortieth anniversary and packed with nods to earlier adventures.

The Daniel Craig reboot

In 2006 Casino Royale tore the series back to the studs, recasting Bond as a raw, newly promoted double 0 agent and launching Daniel Craig's celebrated run. Its sequel Quantum of Solace followed in 2008 as a rare direct continuation. The high point came with Skyfall in 2012, directed by Sam Mendes, which became the first Bond film to pass one billion dollars at the worldwide box office and won an Academy Award for Adele's title song. Mendes returned for Spectre in 2015, whose Sam Smith theme, Writing's on the Wall, became the first Bond song to top the UK singles chart and also took home an Oscar.
