Tupac was born Lesane Parish Crooks and renamed at age one after Tupac Amaru II, a descendant of the last Inca ruler who led a revolt against Spanish rule in Peru and was executed in 1781. The name, meaning shining serpent, framed a life his mother tied to resistance from the start.
His 1991 debut 2Pacalypse Now drew fire from then Vice President Dan Quayle, who said after a Texas trooper's killing was blamed on the record that it had no place in society. The album's socially conscious songs, including Brenda's Got a Baby, put teenage pregnancy and police brutality into mainstream rap.
Me Against the World reached number one on the Billboard 200 in 1995 while Shakur was incarcerated, making him the first male solo artist to top the chart from behind bars. It sold upward of 240,000 copies in its first week and stayed at number one for four consecutive weeks, his longest run at the top.
Released in February 1996 on Death Row and Interscope, All Eyez on Me was billed as the first double full length solo studio album in hip hop. It sold 566,000 copies in its opening week and topped both the Billboard 200 and the R&B and Hip-Hop chart, becoming his commercial peak.
All Eyez on Me was certified Diamond by the RIAA in July 2014, eighteen years after Shakur was killed. Because it is a double album the RIAA counts each copy as two units, and the certification reflected shipments passing the ten million mark for the sprawling 27 track set.
