The Nike Swoosh was drawn in 1971 by Portland State graphic-design student Carolyn Davidson, who billed 17.5 hours of work for a total of 35 dollars.
Phil Knight's first reaction to the Swoosh was famously lukewarm: 'I don't love it, but it will grow on me.' Nike later thanked Davidson with company stock and a gold Swoosh ring.
Blue Ribbon Sports, Nike's original name, was founded on 25 January 1964 by track coach Bill Bowerman and runner Phil Knight to import Onitsuka Tiger shoes from Japan.
The company split from Onitsuka in 1971 and renamed itself Nike, after the Greek goddess of victory.
The Nike Cortez, released in 1972, was the brand's first in-house running shoe and was designed by Bill Bowerman; it was originally called the 'Mexico' before a naming dispute with Adidas.
The slogan 'Just Do It' was created in 1988 by Dan Wieden of the Portland agency Wieden and Kennedy to unify Nike's first major television campaign.
