Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon Poster

About the Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon poster

What is the Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon poster?

This is an independent fine art print inspired by the cover of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon, the landmark album released on 1 March 1973 through Harvest Records. It reproduces the famous prism and light spectrum motif designed by Hipgnosis, presented as gallery quality wall art rather than official licensed merchandise. The album reached No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 in April 1973 and went on to spend more than 900 weeks on that chart, a record run that makes this one of music's most recognisable images.

The image is printed edge to edge on fine art paper in A4, A3, A2 and A1, available unframed or in a black or chrome frame.

The story behind the cover

One prism, one beam, endless meaning

The cover shows a simple glass prism dispersing a single beam of white light into a spectrum of colours against pure black. Created by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis with drawing by George Hardie, it deliberately rejected a band photo in favour of a clean graphic emblem. The triangle hints at light, ambition and madness, themes running through the record, while the rainbow that spills across the sleeve carries over into the vinyl's inner gatefold. Few designs distil a whole album into such an instantly readable, timeless mark.

The Dark Side of the Moon was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London between June 1972 and January 1973, with many songs road tested live during 1972 tours. It is a concept work exploring money, greed, time, mental illness and war. Producing themselves for the first time, the band worked with engineer Alan Parsons on tape loops, cash register sounds and studio effects. Clare Torry improvised the soaring wordless vocal on The Great Gig in the Sky, and heavy FM airplay for Money helped drive the album to No. 1.

Why this Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon print stands out

Museum grade, not merch grade

This artwork lives or dies on contrast, and our print delivers it: a deep, even black field so the prism's refracted spectrum glows with clean red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet bands. Archival pigment inks hold the sharp geometry of the triangle and the smooth colour gradient without banding, rewarding a large A2 or A1 where the beam stretches boldly across a wall.

Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon poster, FAQ

Frequently asked

Is this an official licensed Pink Floyd poster?
No. This is an independent fine art print inspired by the album's cover artwork. It is not official licensed merchandise and is not affiliated with Pink Floyd, Hipgnosis or Harvest Records. We sell it as gallery style wall art celebrating a famous 1973 design.
What is the best size for a wall?
For a feature wall or above a sofa, A1 or A2 lets the prism and its spectrum command the room. A3 suits gallery clusters and shelves, while A4 works for desks or a music corner. The bold black background reads well at every size.
Which framing should I choose?
A black frame deepens the album's black field and makes the rainbow pop, the classic choice. A chrome frame adds a sleek, modern edge that suits the graphic prism. Unframed is ideal if you already have frames or prefer clip hanging.
What paper and print quality do you use?
We print on 200 gsm acid free fine art paper using archival pigment inks rated to last over 100 years. The result is a smooth colour gradient, crisp triangle geometry and a rich black, all edge to edge with no white border.
What does the cover artwork mean?
The prism dispersing white light into a spectrum reflects the album's themes of light, ambition and madness. Designed by Hipgnosis, it deliberately avoided a band photo, choosing a clean emblem that mirrors the record's ideas about clarity, colour and the human mind.
Does this make a good gift?
Yes. The Dark Side of the Moon is one of the most recognisable images in music, so this print is a strong gift for Pink Floyd fans, vinyl collectors and anyone who loves classic album art. Pair it with a black frame for an instant present.
How do I care for the print?
Keep it out of direct sunlight to preserve the deep black and vivid spectrum, and avoid damp rooms. Handle unframed prints by the edges. Framing behind glass or acrylic adds further protection and keeps the surface clean over the years.
