Good to know about MF Doom

• ◆MF DOOM was Daniel Dumile, a British-American rapper born in London on 13 July 1971 and raised in the New York area. He built an entire career on anonymity behind a metal mask, and his death on 31 October 2020, at the age of 49, was only announced by his family two months later on 31 December 2020. The delay felt eerily in character for an artist who spent his life controlling exactly what the public got to see.
• ◆Before DOOM, Dumile rapped as Zev Love X in the early-1990s group KMD, short for Kausin' Much Damage. The group fell apart in 1993 when his brother and bandmate DJ Subroc died, and their album Black Bastards was shelved by Elektra in 1994 over its cover art. Dumile disappeared from the industry entirely, and that collapse is the wound the villain persona was built to answer.
• ◆The mask is the whole brand. It started as a nod to the Marvel villain Doctor Doom, and the physical piece DOOM wore on stage was famously adapted from a gladiator prop tied to the 2000 film Gladiator. In his earliest comeback shows he simply pulled a pair of pantyhose over his face, refining the disguise before it hardened into the iconic metal look.
• ◆Operation: Doomsday, released on the small Fondle 'Em label on 19 October 1999, was DOOM's self-produced solo debut. It reintroduced Dumile after years away and laid down the blueprint: dusty soul samples, comic-book skits, and a masked narrator swearing revenge on the industry that dropped him. It remains the foundation stone of his entire catalogue.
• ◆Madvillainy, released on Stones Throw Records on 23 March 2004, paired DOOM with producer Madlib as the duo Madvillain. Madlib built most of the beats on a short trip to Brazil using minimal gear, a Boss SP-303 sampler, a turntable and a tape deck. The result is widely regarded as DOOM's masterpiece and one of the defining cult classics of underground hip hop.
• ◆Mm..Food arrived on Rhymesayers Entertainment on 16 November 2004, the same busy year as Madvillainy. It is a full concept album wrapped around food, stacking edible metaphors and double meanings across nearly every track. The title itself is a direct anagram of MF DOOM, a small puzzle that sums up his love of wordplay.
• ◆Born Like This, released simply as DOOM through Lex Records on 24 March 2009, was his last solo studio album. Its title comes from the Charles Bukowski poem Dinosauria, We, and a recording of Bukowski reading the poem is sampled on the record. It closes the studio run on a darker, more apocalyptic note.
• ◆DOOM sometimes sent masked stand-ins, nicknamed DOOMposters, to perform in his place at concerts. Fans were split, some furious at paying to watch an imposter, others delighted that a self-styled supervillain would pull exactly that kind of stunt. The idea echoes the Doom-Bots of the Marvel comics, robot doubles that commit crimes in the real Doctor Doom's name.
