Few bands turned the album sleeve into a gallery piece the way Pink Floyd did. From 1971 onward the group worked hand in glove with Storm Thorgerson and the London design studio Hipgnosis, who treated each cover as a surreal photograph rather than a band portrait. No logo, rarely a face, often no text at all. That restraint is exactly why these images read so well blown up and framed on a wall.

The early seventies, sound as landscape

The collection opens with Meddle from 1971, whose sleeve is an ear submerged under rippling water, shot by Bob Dowling for Hipgnosis. It is an abstract invitation to listen, fitting for a record whose entire second side is swallowed by the 23 minute piece "Echoes". Note that the Syd Barrett era albums recorded before Meddle are not yet part of this collection.

Then comes the one everyone knows. The Dark Side of the Moon from 1973 gave the world the prism, drawn by Hipgnosis artist George Hardie after Thorgerson found a physics textbook photo of light splitting through glass. Richard Wright had asked for something clean, elegant and graphic, and the triangle became the unofficial trademark of the band. It is a commercial monument too, having spent more weeks on the Billboard 200 than any other title in chart history.

The mid to late seventies, fire, pigs and walls

Wish You Were Here from 1975 stages two businessmen shaking hands, one of them literally on fire, a picture about absence and an industry that burns its artists. Stuntman Ronnie Rondell Jr. took the flames for roughly fifteen takes on a Warner Bros backlot. The record itself is a tribute to Syd Barrett.

Animals from 1977 floats a giant inflatable pig named Algie between the chimneys of Battersea Power Station, a bleak Orwellian read on capitalism. During the shoot Algie broke free, drifted to 30,000 feet and forced Heathrow to cancel flights, which only added to the legend.

The Wall from 1979 is the most minimal cover the band ever used, just a blank white brick wall drawn by cartoonist Gerald Scarfe on Roger Waters' kitchen table. Waters skipped Hipgnosis for this one. Behind that plain surface sits a double album rock opera that topped the US charts for fifteen weeks.

The reunion years, heads and clouds

The Division Bell from 1994 sets two enormous metal heads facing each other in a field near Ely Cathedral, each as tall as a double decker bus, angled so the gap between them forms a third face. It is a picture about communication and its absence, and the album reached number one in both the UK and the US.

The collection closes with The Endless River from 2014, the band's final album and a tribute to keyboardist Richard Wright. Its cover, a man punting across a river of clouds toward the sun, was designed by an 18 year old Egyptian artist, Ahmed Emad Eldin, discovered on Behance by former Hipgnosis partner Aubrey Powell.

Sizes and framing

Every poster prints on museum grade heavyweight paper with deep, rich blacks, which matters enormously for images built on dark backgrounds like the prism and the flying pig. Choose A4 for a desk or shelf, A3 and A2 for a feature above a sofa, up to A1 for a bold statement piece. Order unframed to slot into your own frame, or framed and ready to hang straight out of the box.

Building a gallery wall

Pink Floyd covers reward hanging in a group. Because most share a spare palette and plenty of negative space, three or four together read as a considered set rather than clutter. Pair the prism with the flying pig and the burning handshake for an instant classic trio, or run the discography left to right by year so the covers tell the story in order. Keep the frames identical and let the artwork do the talking.

Pink Floyd never asked you to look at the band. They asked you to look at an idea. A prism, a burning handshake, a pig over a power station, a blank wall, two steel heads talking past each other. That is what makes these covers work as art on a wall long after the needle lifts. Each one carries a concept you can sit with, and each rewards a second glance from across the room.

The collection here follows the studio run from Meddle in 1971 through to The Endless River in 2014, the last record the band released. Whether you want the single most recognisable image in rock history over your desk, or the full arc of Storm Thorgerson and Hipgnosis surrealism running along a hallway, the museum grade prints hold the detail and the darkness these designs depend on.

Start with the album that meant the most to you, then build outward. The prism is the obvious anchor, but the burning man and the flying pig are the covers guests always stop to ask about. However you arrange them, you are hanging some of the most considered artwork the album era ever produced.

Good to know about Pink Floyd

  • The Dark Side of the Moon prism was drawn by Hipgnosis artist George Hardie after Storm Thorgerson found a photo of light splitting through a prism in a physics textbook.
  • The Dark Side of the Moon holds the record for the most weeks on the US Billboard 200 of any album in chart history, far ahead of any other title.
  • For the Wish You Were Here cover, stuntman Ronnie Rondell Jr. was set on fire on a Warner Bros backlot and the shot took around fifteen attempts because of the wind, costing him an eyebrow and part of his moustache.
  • The inflatable pig on the Animals cover, named Algie, broke free of its moorings during the 1976 shoot at Battersea Power Station and drifted to about 30,000 feet, forcing Heathrow to cancel flights.
  • Animals took its concept from George Orwell's Animal Farm, dividing society into Dogs, Pigs and Sheep.
  • The Wall cover was the most minimal the band ever used, a blank white brick wall, drawn by cartoonist Gerald Scarfe on Roger Waters' kitchen table rather than by Hipgnosis.
  • The two metal heads on The Division Bell cover stood in a field near Ely Cathedral, each as tall as a double decker bus, sculpted so the gap between them suggests a hidden third face.
  • The Endless River cover, a figure punting across a river of clouds, was created by Ahmed Emad Eldin, an 18 year old Egyptian artist discovered on Behance by former Hipgnosis partner Aubrey Powell after Storm Thorgerson's death in 2013.
