- Bruno Mars was born Peter Gene Hernandez in Honolulu, Hawaii, on October 8, 1985, into a deeply musical family: his father was a Latin percussionist and his mother was a singer, and he grew up surrounded by a Las Vegas style stage revue in Waikiki.
- The name Bruno came from his father, who thought the chunky baby resembled the record setting professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino. Mars finally met his namesake in 2017, decades after the nickname stuck.
- By the age of four, Mars was performing as an Elvis impersonator in the family act, one of the stars of a Waikiki show packed with Motown hits, doo wop melodies, and celebrity impersonations. He later added Michael Jackson to his repertoire.
- His 2010 debut Doo-Wops & Hooligans announced him instantly: lead single "Just the Way You Are" topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four consecutive weeks, and the album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 on its way to a marathon chart run.
- The 2012 follow up Unorthodox Jukebox reached number one on the Billboard 200 and topped charts in the UK, Australia, Switzerland, and Canada. It later won Best Pop Vocal Album at the 56th Grammy Awards in 2014.
