Good to know about ASAP Rocky
- ASAP Rocky was born Rakim Mayers on October 3, 1988, in Harlem, New York. His first name was given in tribute to Rakim, one half of the pioneering duo Eric B. and Rakim, so a rap legend's name was literally built into him from birth. He later took the ASAP moniker from the collective he joined, and he also produces records under the alter ego Lord Flacko.
- The story really starts with Live.Love.A$AP, released as a free digital download on Halloween, October 31, 2011, through Polo Grounds Music and RCA. Two singles, "Peso" and "Purple Swag," turned an underground Harlem rapper into a national conversation almost overnight. The buzz set off a bidding war among labels that Rocky reportedly ended with a deal worth around three million dollars.
- Rocky never came up alone. He rose through ASAP Mob, a Harlem collective formed in 2006 by Steven Rodriguez, better known as A$AP Yams, alongside A$AP Bari, A$AP Kham, and A$AP Illz. The letters stand for Always Strive And Prosper, and Rocky joined the crew before becoming its most famous face, carrying the whole movement into the mainstream.
- LONG.LIVE.A$AP, his debut studio album, landed on January 15, 2013, and went straight to number one on the US Billboard 200. It moved 139,000 album equivalent units in its first week, confirming that the mixtape hype was no fluke and that Rocky could convert underground credibility into commercial numbers at the very top of the chart.
- His second album, AT.LONG.LAST.A$AP, arrived on May 26, 2015, and gave him a second consecutive number one on the Billboard 200 with 146,000 units in its opening week. The record was executive produced by Danger Mouse, the late A$AP Yams, and Rocky himself, with Juicy J credited as a co-executive producer, and it leaned into a warmer, psychedelic sound.
- AT.LONG.LAST.A$AP is inseparable from loss. A$AP Yams, Rocky's mentor and the mastermind behind the Mob, was found dead on January 18, 2015, at age 26, months before the album dropped. The finished record plays as a psychedelic tribute to Yams, giving a chart topping rap album an unusual streak of wistful, hazy grief running underneath it.
- Testing, released May 25, 2018, was Rocky's most experimental project, folding psych rock, trap, alternative R&B, and electronic textures into one record. Its lead single "ASAP Forever" is built around a sample of Moby's "Porcelain," with Moby credited as a featured artist, while the fan favorite "Praise the Lord (Da Shine)" pairs Rocky with British star Skepta.
- Beyond music, Rocky became a genuine fashion force. He served as a Dior Men brand ambassador and built the AWGE creative collective, blending streetwear with high fashion so effectively that the phrase "ASAP style" entered the vocabulary. His collaborations and runway presence, alongside brands like Guess and Gucci, made him one of hip hop's defining tastemakers of the 2010s.
