Grime: the sound that started it all

Before drill, before the streaming numbers, there was grime: 140bpm, built in East London bedrooms in the early 2000s. Skepta is the scene's elder statesman, a Tottenham MC and co-founder of the Boy Better Know collective whose 2016 album Konnichiwa won that year's Mercury Prize and dragged grime from the underground into the pop charts. Dave: the storyteller from Streatham

No British rapper this generation has been decorated quite like Santan Dave. His 2019 debut Psychodrama entered the Official Albums Chart at Number 1 with the biggest first-week streaming figures for a British rap album at the time, then went on to win the 2019 Mercury Prize and Album of the Year at the 2020 Brit Awards. His 2021 second album, We're All Alone in This Together, landed the biggest opening week of 2021 in the UK and returned him to Number 1. UK drill: Central Cee and the new wave

Drill crossed the Atlantic from Chicago, mutated in South London and, by the 2020s, became Britain's dominant rap sound. Central Cee is its biggest export. The Shepherd's Bush rapper reached Number 2 with his 2021 debut mixtape Wild West, then scored his first UK Number 1 album with 2022's 23. In 2023 he joined forces with Dave for the Split Decision EP, whose lead single "Sprinter" spent ten weeks at Number 1 and became the longest-running Number 1 rap song in UK chart history. London-born, worldwide: 21 Savage and MF DOOM

Two of rap's most quietly British stories close the collection. 21 Savage was born in Plaistow, East London in 1992, a fact the wider world only learned in 2019, and both his 2018 album I Am > I Was and his 2020 collaboration with Metro Boomin, Savage Mode II, debuted at Number 1 on the US Billboard 200. His 2024 solo record American Dream leans into that born-in-London, raised-in-Atlanta identity. MF DOOM, the masked underground icon, was also born in London, in 1971, and his 2004 Madlib collaboration Madvillainy is regularly cited as one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever made.
