- Five Nights at Freddy's was developed and published single-handedly by indie developer Scott Cawthon, who wrote, coded and rendered the whole game himself.
- The idea grew from criticism: Cawthon's earlier family game Chipper & Sons Lumber Co. was mocked because its characters looked like creepy animatronics, so he made that the point of his next game.
- A playable demo appeared on IndieDB on 24 July 2014, before the full game launched on Desura on 8 August 2014 and on Steam on 18 August 2014.
- The player controls night security guard Mike Schmidt, who must survive from midnight to 6am watching the pizzeria through flickering security cameras.
- The core band is Freddy Fazbear the bear, Bonnie the rabbit and Chica the chicken, with Foxy the fox lurking in a separate Pirate Cove.
- Golden Freddy is a hidden, hallucination-like animatronic that appears in the original game as an unsettling easter egg rather than a standard enemy.
- The game became a YouTube sensation, spawning countless Let's Play reactions and a fan community that spent years decoding its hidden lore.
