- The Clash released London Calling in December 1979, and Rolling Stone later named the double album the best of the 1980s, even though it reached Britain weeks before the decade began.
- Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, released in 1977, won the Grammy for Album of the Year and has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide.
- The cover of Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures, released on 15 June 1979, is a stacked plot of radio waves from pulsar CP 1919, adapted by designer Peter Saville from an astronomy encyclopaedia.
- For their two Knebworth shows in August 1996, Oasis drew about 125,000 people per night, and a reported 2.5 million fans applied for tickets.
- Radiohead released In Rainbows in October 2007 as a pay-what-you-want download, the first such release authorised by a major act, and it still topped the UK and US album charts on physical release.
- Green Day's American Idiot, a 2004 rock opera, topped the Billboard 200 and won the Grammy for Best Rock Album at the 2005 ceremony.
- Deftones released White Pony in 2000 and won their first Grammy the following year, Best Metal Performance for the single Elite, at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards.
